African American Schools in Bowling Green
African American high schools such as State Street and High Street were blessed with dedicated, highly-educated teachers, sports teams, extracurricular organizations, and an overall focus on educating and preparing the youth to be successful.
State Street High and Elementary School became the most important center of community activities. During its existence, State Street High School often attracted students from nearby towns that did not have black high schools. Some students traveled from counties away just to attend these schools.
From 1955 to 1965, High Street School replaced State Street High School. Bowling Green schools prepared its graduates for employment or additional study in colleges and universities across the country.
