African American healthcare providers included Dr. Z. K. Jones, Dr. O. D. Porter, Dr. W.F. Beckett, Dr. Issac B. Bruton and Ora Porter R.N. Drs. Porter, Jones, Beckett and Bruton worked from their homes. Ms. Porter became well-known as a highly-skilled private care nurse and according to some sources, was the first registered nurse in Kentucky.
